Malik Beasley evalúa cambiar su declaración en la causa por Manipulation de partidos

El/docker sports undergoes a federal investigation in the United States over the alleged manipulation of individual player statistics, and Malik Beasley could soon reach an agreement with prosecutors to declare himself guilty. The American shooting guard, who is currently a member of the Detroit Pistons, acknowledged through his attorney Steve Haney that the conversations are continuing, although there is not yet a formal agreement and a resolution could come at the beginning of next week.

Four games are at the center of the case

The accusation, filed in June, alleges that Beasley deliberately altered his performance in four games during the 2023-24 season, when he played for the Milwaukee Bucks, to benefit bettors who had wagered on his individual statistics. The games identified in the legal documents were against the Cleveland Cavaliers on January 26, the Charlotte Hornets on February 27, the Los Angeles Clippers on March 10, and the Brooklyn Nets on March 21.

The prosecution also refers to Beasley's prior gambling debts and a loan from Ed Davis, his former Minnesota Timberwolves teammate, who is also charged in the case. Davis and Beasley's agent, Paolo Zamorano, have pleaded not guilty. Two other defendants, Robert Gorodetsky and Ernesto Plascencia, are also expected to change their initial not-guilty declarations, while William Brown has already pleaded guilty.

  • Beasley is negotiating with federal prosecutors to modify his initial declaration of innocence.
  • The talks are ongoing and no formal agreement has been confirmed.
  • A resolution could be reached at the beginning of next week.
  • The accusation covers four games in the 2023-24 season with the Milwaukee Bucks.

The immediate consequences for Beasley's career

The investigation has already affected the player, who signed with the Pistons after nine seasons in the NBA with Denver, Minnesota, Utah, the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee and Detroit. In 2024-25, Beasley averaged 16.3 points per game and shot 41.6% from three-point range with the Pistons, finishing second in the voting for the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year Award. According to the information available, the Pistons withdrew a three-year offer worth 42 million dollars after learning about the federal investigation.

Beasley's situation is part of a broader series of legal cases involving figures from American basketball. Jontay Porter pleaded guilty in 2024 to conspiring to commit wire fraud and received a lifetime suspension from the NBA, Damon Jones also pleaded guilty to charges related to gambling, and Terry Rozier faces accusations in a case that remains ongoing.

For the basketball community, the episode reinforces the need to examine the relationship between athletes, betting markets and the manipulation of statistical performance. The possible guilty plea does not yet resolve the accusations, but it could bring the matter closer to a legal conclusion and leave unresolved the sporting consequences for a player who had reached one of the strongest seasons of his career. As in many disputes involving the NBA and wagering, the focus will be on whether the competition can preserve confidence in its statistics while offering a clear response to those responsible for any illegal conduct.
